Hello, my name is Hsing-Yu Shih (施星宇). I am a Software Engineer at Google, specializing in MCU and RTOS firmware, board support packages, device drivers, and hardware/software integration. Before joining Google, I built and shipped production systems across cloud infrastructure and consumer wearables at Microsoft and Meta.

I earned my master’s degree in Communication Engineering from National Taiwan University’s Graduate Institute of Communication Engineering. I also hold a bachelor’s degree in Information Management and a second bachelor’s degree in Forestry and Resource Conservation from National Taiwan University.

Magic has been one of my greatest passions since college, when I served as vice president of the NTU Magic Club and performed actively. Through magic, I learned prop-making and developed a lasting interest in building things. Today, I am a Co-Founder and Systems Engineer at Hypothesis Magic, where I oversee electronic circuitry, embedded firmware, and software development for professional magic products.

During graduate school, my research focused on detecting suspicious accounts in online services, with an emphasis on data science, machine learning, and communication networks. I also joined the photography club, where I learned darkroom techniques and continued developing my photography skills.

My professional journey began with a Microsoft internship in 2021. I returned to Microsoft in 2023, first as a Technical Program Manager and later as a Firmware Engineer, working on server software / firmware and Azure liquid-cooling infrastructure. In 2026, I joined Meta’s Wearables Core OS team, where I worked on sensor board support packages, device drivers, and manufacturing firmware for next-generation wearable and AI devices, before moving to Google as a Software Engineer.

About This Site

In 2022, a friend reminded me that we had accumulated so much knowledge and experience that it was time to document it. This site is where I collect what I have learned about embedded systems, Linux, interviews, technology careers, photography, travel, magic, and life.
